COLOUR CALIBRATION

Why Calibrate?

I was never comfortable making colour decisions that didn’t have any certainty, so I decided to dive in and start measuring colour stuff…

It’s far from straightforward. Calibration is an engineering feat normally carried out by dedicated professionals. Half the battle, I found, is separating out that which I need to know, from that which is relevant only in the realm of colour physics. Suspending my natural desire to dig too deep has not been easy. The objective however is simple - is this monitor accurate?”

So far, I can verify that there is no clipping in the blacks & that I can see the right amount of detail in the shadows.

Diffuse whites (like paper and the white fabric of a shirt) are free from colour hue contamination. They sit just under the top of the range, as they should.

The colour balance, saturation & brightness levels are all very close to 100% throughout the range.

Each time you bring one area into line, another drops off & is now slightly off-kilter. It’s a tricky, slightly obsessive, circular process, but one which makes colour grading a lot more enjoyable.

I've invested in the OEM X-rite Display Pro, Colourspace software from Light illusion and I calibrate my TV Logic LUM313G video reference monitor about once a month.
